Dr. Alana Saxe is committed to reducing the carbon footprint—one patient at a time!

Much like aligning teeth, big changes start with small adjustments. Saxe kicked off her own clean earth campaign at square one, designing an environmentally-green office which truly sets Saxe Orthodontics apart from the pack. Her loft-style boutique practice features energy-efficient window shades and a LED video wall. The floors and countertops are made from recycled material and the walls are covered in earth-friendly paint. Six-second hand dryers are set up in the restrooms and a reverse osmosis faucet was installed instead of a water cooler.

This commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle doesn’t end there. The entire Saxe Orthodontics staff is equally eco-conscious. The women use organic gauze and hand soap, digital radiographs, internet insurance claims and all necessary printing is done on recycled paper, just to name a few.

FORTY UNDER FORTY

Dr. Alana Saxe moved to Nevada in 1995 to take a position as a registered nurse at University Medical Center’s Burn Intensive Care Unit. But while she enjoyed providing care to burn victims, her heart was in orthodontics.

“I think every kid that gets braces, it’s such a life changing experience for them that we all become fascinated with it,” she says. “To have had these horrible buck teeth and have them turn into a great smile was an incredible experience for me.”

In 2002, Saxe graduated from UNLV’s School of Dental Medicine, also receiving a specialty certificate in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics. By 2006, she had her own practice in an office environment that was built with sustainability in mind. Saxe’s office is paperless, has countertops and carpet made of recycled materials, VOC (volatile organic compound)-free paint, among many other green touches. She even uses organic gauze and digital x-rays.

Saxe also promotes dental hygiene throughout the Clark County School District. In February, national dental hygiene month, she visits roughly 20 schools each year in her dental-themed “Happy Bus”, a 1962 VW bus that she affectionately refers to as her mid-life crisis car. In two years, she has done presentations to more than 4,000 first graders. Saxe also started a scholarship fund allowing three Valley juniors high students each year to win free braces.
“People can’t afford braces now and are putting it on the back-burner because of the economy,” she adds. “It was such a high to be able to give those kids that service.”

Dr. Alana Saxe has been serving the Las Vegas medical community since 1995 when she moved from California to Nevada. In Las Vegas, her first position was with the University Medical Center’s Burn Intensive Care Unit as a registered nurse. Dr. Saxe decided to change careers and graduated at the top of her class earning a Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s School of Dental Medicine where she also received her specialty certificate in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. She is also a member of The American Association of Orthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Nevada Dental Association and Southern Nevada Dental Association.

“Two influences in my childhood sparked my interest in medicine and dentistry,” said Dr. Saxe, “The first being my mom since she was an operating room registered nurse. I grew up around the small hospital in my hometown, oftentimes waiting in the nurses’ lounge in the late hours of the night while my mom assisted with emergency surgeries. This started my fascination with medicine and biology.”
